Sunset Educare: A Journey of Strength

Grow ECD Success Story | Pamela Petersen | Sunset Educare | Cape Town

In the heart of Ravensmead, Cape Town, Sunset Educare stands as a testament to resilience, faith, and dedication. What began with just two children in 2007 has grown into a thriving early childhood development (ECD) centre, serving 124 children under the leadership of Pamela Petersen. Her story is one of perseverance, a deep love for children, and a determination to uplift her community.

Pamela’s vision was born from challenges. Her journey to starting Sunset Educare is as inspiring as it is heartfelt. “I opened my crèche on 7 February 2007 with no matric, no ECD qualifications, and just two children,” she recalls. “The parents of those two children advertised my crèche through word of mouth, and it has been growing ever since.”

Her motivation came from personal challenges and a desire to create a safe, nurturing environment for children. “The love of my three sons, my passion for children, and the people who believed in me kept me going,” she shares. Despite facing emotional, physical, and substance abuse in her marriage, Pamela’s faith and the support of her community gave her the strength to succeed.

Pamela discovered Grow ECD through her role as Chairlady of the PURE ECD Forum, a position she’s held since 2008. “I invited Grow ECD to present at one of our forum meetings, and I was amazed by what they offered. It was everything I had prayed for to take my business to the next level,” she explains.

Grow ECD’s curriculum, resources, and training opportunities resonated deeply with her. Pamela also decided to apply for a low-cost loan through Grow ECD to help manage her centre’s financial challenges.

“With the low income from fees and the high expenses of salaries and other costs, I couldn’t afford everything. Grow ECD made it possible. It’s affordable and will definitely take your business to the next level,” she advises.

For the school: Pamela is proud of how far Sunset Educare has come. “Our school was already full way before the new year. Grow ECD helped us become a Centre of Excellence, and we’ve been able to raise our fees for the coming year.”

For the teachers: The training and resources provided by Grow ECD have had a huge impact. “The teachers now have a better understanding of how to implement the curriculum with the resources,” Pamela explains.

For the children: Pamela lights up when she talks about the children. “They are so happy to come to the Educare Centre. They learn something new every day and are excited to play with the resources.”

For Pamela herself: For Pamela, the transformation has been personal as well as professional. “As for myself, I had a huge transformation and wake up call. As an owner I now think more with my head and not only with my heart. I also want the business side of my ECD to be a success thanks to Grow ECD.”

Pamela encourages other ECD owners to embrace the opportunities that come their way. “Don’t quit. Believe in God and in yourself to make a success of your business. ECD is the best thing that has happened to me, and I would like to motivate other ECD centre owners to grow in their business.”

Pamela Petersen’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with determination, community support, and the right tools. Sunset Educare is not just a school; it’s a beacon of hope in Ravensmead, and Pamela’s story inspires others to dream big and work tirelessly to make those dreams come true.
